Duing this renovation I have spent an obsessive amount of time thinking about surface sheen. Basically every decision involves the question: matte, semi-gloss or glossy? Most of my decisions have been in the direction of matte with a few exceptions.
The wall paint : Egg shell (very slight sheen)
Ceiling paint: Benjamin Moore Matte which actually has a teensy bit of sheen--not totally 'flat"
Door & floor trim : semi gloss (easier to clean!)
Marble floors in bathrooms : polished/glossy
Marble for kitchen & bathroom counters : unpolished/honed
Saltillo tile flooring indoors & outdoors: matte sealer
Hardwood floors : commercial grade water based MATTE sealer. (hides scratches much better than glossy--a plus when you have 3 kids & 3 large dogs)
